Originality: unmodified cars in factory colours usually attract the most buyers later.

History: a thick folder of receipts, MOT certificates and owner records adds real value. Gaps in history take it away.

Rarity: limited editions, top trims and the last of a model line tend to be sought after.

Condition first: rust and poor restoration are expensive. Get an inspection from a marque specialist before paying.

Running costs: budget for specialist servicing, dry storage and agreed-value classic insurance.

Age perks: in Great Britain, vehicles built more than 40 years ago can qualify for the historic vehicle tax class, and many can be exempt from the MOT if not substantially changed. Check gov.uk for the current rules.
